FROM THE PARKS DESK, AUGUST 2008

Staff News

We are fortunate that the Grampians attracts talented staff who make a long term contribution to the Park. Congratulations to Ken Lever and Graeme Hughes who have both provided 40 years of service in the Grampians. Ken and Graeme were originally employed by the Forests Commission and more recently by Parks Victoria. They both provide other staff with valuable insight into many aspects of Park management, especially in the areas of road and track maintenance and fire suppression.

This week Ken has announced his retirement and is looking forward to spending more time with wife Marie on their Halls Gap property. We wish them well for a long and happy retirement. The Park is planning a farewell function in October.

Fire Recovery Works

Funding has been finalised for remaining Fire Recovery works. This financial year Parks Victoria will be undertaking works on the Pinnacle to Halls Gap, Mackenzie Falls to Fish Falls and Red Gum Walking Tracks. These tracks have been closed since the 2006 fire and significant works are required to reopen them.

Both the Pinnacle to Halls Gap and Mackenzie Falls to Fish Falls Walking Tracks have sections that will be reconstructed to address design and erosion issues.

Our staff will work closely with the FOGG’s to restore the Red Gum Walking Track and initial planning has commenced.

Other Major Works

This financial year we will replace the Pinnacle walking Track footbridge at Wonderland Car Park. Our plan is to provide a more durable structure that fits in with the character of the site.

Plans for camp ground improvements are progressing well and this year improvement works are planned to be carried out at Jimmy Creek Camp, Plantation and Smiths Mill Campgrounds.
