Entire Grampians Peak Trail NOW Open 10th November for Day Walkers!
Parks Victoria, with the help of dedicated volunteers, completed essential maintenance on the Grampians Peak Trail from October 27–31. These works have paved the way for the entire trail to reopen on 10th November —initially for day walkers only.
Campgrounds along the trail are expected to reopen sometime next year, which will be welcome news for overnight walkers keen to camp along the route.
Trail Running Event – GPT 100 (6-9 November 2025)
The GPT 100 long-distance trail running event was held from Thursday 6 November to Sunday 9 November 2025, traversing the entire Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park along the Grampians Peaks Trail. Participants covered the full 162km route from Mt Zero (Mura Mura) in the north to Dunkeld in the south, split across several race formats and stages. Over four days, runners tackled designated trail sections in daylight, returning each night to accommodation, with some resuming their races the next morning. The GPT100 miler contenders completed the entire trail in one push, starting at 8am on Friday at Mt Zero and running through the night, finishing in Dunkeld as early as 5am Saturday! Parks Victoria facilitated the event, and images from the 2025 race are available at the official GPT100 gallery.
What’s Open What’s Closed Update 24.10.2025
? What’s Open
During the summer of 2024/2025 the central and western areas of Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park and the central section of Grampians Peaks Trail were impacted by multiple bushfires devastating 80% of its landscape. Since then, a staged re-opening has commenced and many popular visitor areas have re-opened in the Northern, Wonderland and Southern areas of the park. However, many visitor sites and roads remain closed in the Sundial, Mount William, Victoria Range, Victoria Valley and Wallaby Rocks areas.
Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park 12.11.2025 – Manja Shelter Walk
Manja Shelter Walk has reopened to visitors.
Manja Shelter is an Aboriginal Rock Art Site in the Victoria Range (western section) of Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park. Access to Manja Shelter is via a 1-hour (2.6km return) Grade 3 walk from the car park on Harrops Track.
Please be aware the forest surrounding the shelter has been impacted by fire and is recovering. Help stop weed spread and damage to cultural and environmental values by wearing clean boots and staying on designated walking tracks.
Rock Climbing and Bouldering and Conditions for climbing and bouldering.
There are more than 100 designated rock-climbing areas in the landscape including 13 bouldering areas. Most of these areas have multiple climbs within them.
Please note there are conditions to rock climbing in the Gariwerd landscape, including:
? Rock climbing can only occur in designated areas.
? Rock climbers are responsible for assessing and accepting the risks associated with climbing within these areas.
? Climbers are required to minimise the use of chalk and only use chalk coloured to match the rock surface.
? Adhere to signs and notifications and do not enter closed areas.
For detailed information regarding access to rock climbing and bouldering sites go to Parks Victoria Rock Climbing in Gariwerd: Rock Climbing in Gariwerd
Roads in fire impacted areas
Many of the roads within the National Park due for reopening to the public by late July were impacted by weather events. There will be longer term closures required for some roads, where significant damage has occurred, and further essential works are required. Many of the roads within the National Park have now reopened, including tracks that are seasonally closed which reopened from 30-10-25

NOW OPEN February 2026
Mt William Rd and The Mount William (Duwul) Summit Walk is now open, but the Sheep Hills track from the Grampians road to Mount William carpark remains closed.
Mount Zero Picnic Area DROP OFF ONLY (no carparking at this stage)
From 10 November 2025, the Mount Zero Picnic Area, car park, and associated facilities were closed to enable major construction works as part of upgrades to the Grampians Peaks Trail – Mura Mura Trailhead. These upgrades aim to improve trail access, expand parking, and enhance the visitor experience with new picnic amenities, signage, and landscaping. The core construction—necessitating full closure—was scheduled to finish before Christmas 2025, although minor works were set to continue into February 2026. Parks Victoria indicated the site would reopen as soon as safety permits, minimizing impact on trail users and the local community.
During the closure, no parking is available at Mount Zero Picnic Area or Trailhead. Trail access for both day and overnight hikers continues via drop off/pick up only. Toilets remain available at Hollow Mountain Car Park and Stapylton Campground. Walkers heading for the Stapylton Loop Walk should use the trailhead at Stapylton Campground, noting limited parking on Olive Plantation Road.
Mackenzie Falls (Migunang wirab) will be closed from February 9th 2026
MacKenzie Falls is one of the most spectacular and most visited sites in the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park. The Victorian Government is investing $7.76 million to revitalise the Mackenzie Falls (Migunang wirab) visitor precinct.
This will include a new main viewing platform at the base of the falls, safety improvements to reduce the risk of falling rocks, upgrades to the Bluff Lookout track, increased carparking capacity and improved traffic flow, and installation of wayfinding and interpretative signage.
Works starting on Monday 9 February 2026
Once construction starts in February 2026, the Mackenzie Falls precinct will need to close for the works to take place safely.
There will be no access for vehicles or visitors at the Mackenzie Falls Precinct during construction. The carpark will be a construction site throughout the works period with large machinery operating and materials being stored on site.
This includes the Mackenzie Falls carpark, and all walking tracks in the precinct including Broken Falls, Mackenzie Falls to the base of the falls from the carpark, Bluff Lookout, and parts of Mackenzie Falls River walking track.
At this stage we anticipate that construction work will finish in the second half of the year.
Alternative day walks from Zumsteins Picnic Area
Once construction works start at the Mackenzie Falls precinct, parking at the popular Zumsteins Picnic Area will be limited, especially for large vehicles (buses and caravans) during weekends and holiday periods.
Access to Fish Falls and the base of Mackenzie Falls will remain possible from Zumsteins Picnic Area up to and including the Autumn School Holidays.
However, there will need to be a full closure of Zumsteins and Mackenzie Falls for one week (prior to Autumn School Holidays) due to helicopter operations occurring in the vicinity.
From May until works are complete, the base of Mackenzie Falls will be inaccessible. Fish Falls will still be accessible from Zumsteins Picnic Area.
Check the Parks Victoria for the most up-to-date Change of Conditions.
Walks from Zumsteins
Access to the steps at the base of Mackenzie Falls to the Mackenzie Falls carpark will be closed to walkers. Return by the same route to Zumsteins Picnic Area.
