It is drawing close to the time when we farewell our seasonal fire crew for another year. Many of the crew have worked in Halls Gap previously and we hope to see them return again next season, but hopefully it will be a much quieter and less hectic season than this year.

The Parks Victoria fire recovery staff who commenced work in October 2008 have made great progress on the Mackey’s Peak to Pinnacle Track, having so far completed the construction of over 345 stone steps and are now awaiting the fabricated steel for the new steel steps for the very steep sections. A second crew have been busy on the Zumstein to McKenzie Falls walk, with around 51m of steel walkway installed and a three metre bridge replaced. They are working towards completing the track by end June 2009.

In anticipation of another hot, dry summer, ten seasonal fire crew have commenced in Halls Gap. These trained seasonal fire-fighters are part of the District team made up of other seasonal fire-fighters based at Horsham, Cavendish, Wail and Edenhope.

Many of the local crew have worked successive seasons in Halls Gap. They have been busy working on pre season fire preparedness works such as fire-line clearing and township protection surrounding Halls Gap and Pomonal.

The crew have been busy with tree risk work, creating the new track and have so far completed the construction of 220 stone steps. Staff News

We are fortunate that the Grampians attracts talented staff who make a long term contribution to the Park. Congratulations to Ken Lever and Graeme Hughes who have both provided 40 years of service in the Grampians. Ken and Graeme were originally employed by the Forests Commission and more recently by Parks Victoria. They both provide other staff with valuable insight into many aspects of Park management, especially in the areas of road and track maintenance and fire suppression.

This week Ken has announced his retirement and is looking forward to spending more time with wife Marie on their Halls Gap property. We wish them well for a long and happy retirement. The Park is planning a farewell function in October.
