The Horsham Lapidary Club has invited us to join with them for an outing to look at the Mt Staveley Volcanic Complex.
Why should this be of interest to FOGGs members? The Cambrian age volcanics are Victorias oldest rocks and underlie the younger Grampians sediments and extend under  later sediments to the north. The edges of this volcanic event are the current source of great exploration activity for minerals all round the Grampians. We have already visited smaller outcrops in the Black Range, and Mt Dryden, but this one is by far the biggest. The Cambrian Volcanics have been tracked by their unusual magnetic signature as shown by the dotted lines below,
They are also quite an interesting type of lava, being basic or ultra basic, making them vastly different from the basalt plains of the Western District, having their origin deep in the earths crust.
prospecting is quite advanced in this area…   https://www.stavely.com.au/stavely-project
The lapidary club is interested because an intrusion of chert occurs amongst the volcanics and this group includes gemstones such as jasper, agates, flint and so on.
